Emily Brontë nacida en 1818 y hermana de las también escritoras Charlotte y Anne, logró crear con Cumbres Borrascosas una de las obras literarias más importantes de la literatura universal; ciertamente su novela no fue bien acogida por la crítica en su momento, como muchas obras artísticas vanguardistas, quizá su sociedad no estaba preparada para su asertiva, poderosa y novedosa forma de escritura.
«Un hombre sensato debe tener bastante compañía consigo mismo”, dice uno de los personajes de Cumbres Borrascosas, evocando la fuerza que se requiere para enfrentar la soledad, ya sea elegida o forzada por las circunstancias, pero que pone a prueba el temple del espíritu. Una soledad que permea toda la atmósfera física y emocional en la novela.
La desesperación, la ira, la venganza, la traición, los secretos familiares y el odio se ven expuestos de manera descarnada por los protagonistas de la historia que se enfrentan a una pasión desbordada que los llena de frustración y deseos reprimidos.
Seis hermanos, su padre y su madre fallecida prematuramente, fueron el mundo que rodeó a Emily, quien encontró en la escritura una fuente de expresión que nos heredó una obra que en palabras de Jorge Luis Borges «es una obra tan extrema e inclasificable como pudiera serlo Moby Dick».
